Pittsburgh Pirates (NHL) - The Pittsburgh Pirates were a professional ice hockey team in the National Hockey League (NHL), based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania from 1925-26 to 1929-30. The nickname comes from the baseball team also based in the city.
The History of the Pittsburgh Pirates - Professional baseball was first played in Pittsburgh in 1876 when the Pittsburgh Alleghenies, joined the American Association in 1882 and the National League in 1887. They became the Pirates by "pirating" second baseman Lou Bierbauer from Philadelphia in 1890.
